Traffic on the Chennai roads yesterday took many by surprise!!
Many important roads in Chennai like Kamarajar Salai, arterial Anna Salai etc were choked with traffic yesterday and it caused many issues. A memorial for former chief minister of TN Dr J. Jayalalitha was inaugurated on the Marina Beach and this led to heavy traffic on many roads in Chennai.
From 6am in the morning, the Kamarajar Salai was closed to accommodate the crowd and make way for the chief minister’s convoy. To reach their destinations, motorists as well as the MTC buses took detours arranged by the traffic police personnel. From various districts in TN, hundreds of buses and vans filled with party cadres reached Chennai city. These buses and vans were parked along the stretch leading to the memorial. Truth is that motorists had a very tough time navigating through the traffic.
The movement of vehicles was very slow on famous roads like Jawaharlal Nehru Salai, Anna Salai, Poonamallee High Road etc. Many buses that were parked on the narrow Walltax Road created issues for the public. Other important roads such as OMR, ECR etc too reported heavy traffic congestion yesterday as there was continuous vehicle flow from the districts even after 6am.
According to Mr. N. Kannan, additional commissioner, more than 5000 vehicles entered Chennai for the memorial inauguration event and this included 2600 buses. He mentioned that there was traffic congestion on certain stretches but there was no complete traffic halt.
From the early morning, Trichy-Chennai highway was full of traffic and many took stops at Mamandur and Maraimalainagar. From Vandalur till the airport, traffic got affected. It was later brought to light by some motorists that they took nearly 2hours to cross the 12km stretch. Traffic police had a very tough day in controlling the traffic on many roads in Chennai.
