Conversion of wet waste into cooking gas. Yes, This would be possible from the end of the month of February when the bio CNG or compressed natural gas plant in Chennai starts to operate. This would be the city of Chennai’s first CNG plant. The CNG plant is in the final stages of construction now and this was mentioned by GCC.
In just a few weeks of time, trial operation would start. This was according to Mr. N. Mahesan, chief engineer (SWM), Chennai Corporation.
It is learnt that the new CNG plant would be making its presence felt on the famous Poonamallee High Road and it would have a capacity of 100 tonnes per day. Truth is that GCC would be setting up as many as 7 bio CNG plants and these would be coming up in 5 locations including the one at the Poonamallee High Road. The total capacity of these 7 bio CNG plants would be 700 tonnes per day.
In Madhavaram, 2 plants each with a total capacity of 100 tonnes per day are being constructed now. It must be noted that Sholinganallur and Koyambedu would have 100 tonnes of capacity each. In addition to these, 2 plants of capacities of 100 tonnes each would be set up at Pallikaranai dumping yard also. An amount of Rs 10 crores has been spent in constructing these bio CNG plants.
Under the public-private partnership and under the private concessionaire, this project is being implemented is known fact. Information is that the civic body would the firms to earn revenue by selling the Bio CNG as the cost of operation and machinery is being borne by the private firms.
As per Mr. Mahesan, teh Bio CNG could be sold to hotels, oil corporations and others etc. Royalty amount would have to be paid to the civic body.
