Rajiv Ranjan assumed office as the new (47th) Chief Secretary of the State Government of Tamil Nadu. Assuming office, he commenced performing his duties on his seat.
K. Shanmugam, who was the erstwhile Chief Secretary, was appointed as the Chief Secretary of the State Government of Tamil Nadu on 29th June 2019. He had passed the IAS (Indian Administration Service) competitive examinations in the year 1958 and was appointed in the IAS Officer Cadre, Tamil Nadu. He was posted as the sub-collector in Cheranmaadevi, Thirunelveli District. After the retirement of the erstwhile Chief Secretary of the State Government of Tamil Nadu, Girija Vaidyanathan, Shanmugam took over as the Chief Secretary.
With this backdrop, his services came to conclude on 31st July 2020. As there was the critical situation at that time due to the raging coronavirus pandemic, his service was extended.
Approving the appeal of the State Government of Tamil Nadu, the central government of India extended his service twice when his retirement was due.
In this scenario, his extended time of service concluded yesterday (Sunday, 31st January). As such, the Central Government appointed Rajiv Ranjan as the new Chief Secretary of the State Government of Tamil Nadu.
