In the previous budget, the Centre had sanctioned Rs 29000 crores for the road projects in TN and the amount this time has tripled. Information is that an amount of Rs 1 lakh crore has been allotted for the road projects in TN by the Centre.
It is learnt that few projects would be implemented on priority basis in 2021 and one amongst would be the much opposed Chennai-Salem corridor. Projects covering a total of 3500km on the roads have been planned by NHAI. For the major projects along the economic corridors and along the ECR, funds have been sanctioned.
Various projects that would be considered are Chennai- Bengaluru Expressway of 278kms, Maduravoyal-Port elevated corridor of 19km, Chennai-Salem corridor of 277km and ECR expansion project, Madurai-Kollam project of 150km and Chittoor –Thatchur project of 115km. For the highway works in Kerala, the Centre has also sanctioned an amount of Rs 65000 crores. The 600 km Kanyakumari-Mumbai corridor of which 75km would be in TN is included.
As per a senior officer belonging to NHAI, it was clear that land acquisitions for the Chennai-Bengaluru expressway is nearing completion and tenders have been floated for all 4 packages. He hinted that the construction would start soon. After making some tweaks in the design, the Maduravoyal project would be taken into consideration. He concluded that the Salem corridor was in the final stages. Union highways minister Mr. T.R. Baalu was not happy about the announcements from the Centre. He threw light on several land disputes that have been pending in the court.
The allocation was appreciated by the stakeholders now. Mr Yuvaraj, TN Truck Owners association spoke about how NHAI must utilise these funds effectively for completing the pending works. Truth is that none of the major highway projects like expansion of Chennai-Tada, Salem-Ulundurpet etc have been completed.
