Segregating suburban and long distance train operations to become a reality in the future!!
The news that has come out is funds have been granted by the Southern Railways or SR for initiating the doubling of the railway track between Chennai Beach and Egmore.
An amount of Rs 5 crores has been allocated for the project and this was announced by Mrs Nirmala Sitharaman, Union finance minister in her budget speech on 1st of February 2021.
The railway board has given approval for the doubling works and this was mentioned by general manager of SR Mr. John Thomas. It is now learnt that this project would get over by 2022 and it would help in segregation suburban and long distance train operations.
It was later pointed out by the general manager of Southern Railways that between Chennai and Kanniyakumari via Shornur there would be 2 tracks for smooth operations of trains. This would be possible once all the doubling works get over.
Various doubling of track projects that would be executed by the Southern Railways would be Madurai-Maniyachi-Thoothukudi, Maniyachi-Nagercoil and Omalur-Mettur dam patch doubling works. It must be noted that there was no mention in the budget regarding allocation of funds for the extension of MRTS from Velachery to St Thomas Mount in the budget. Point is that the elevated track work has been completed till Adambakkam with the available funds.
Soon, the SR would be implementing a train collision and avoidance system or TCAS at a cost of Rs 544 crores. Information gathered is that under this TCAS even if a train jumped a signal then also an accident could be avoided. At a cost of Rs 36 crores, a train management system or TMS for optimum utilisation of services in the Chennai division would be commissioned. This was also mentioned by Mr. John Thomas, general manager, SR.
