The Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC and other departments are involved in the improvement works now and due to this the slum resettlement areas like Perumbakkam and Semmencherry etc would get free Wi-Fi plus other facilities.

According to the Chennai city innovation officer of GCC, Mr. Azhagu Pandia Raja, there would be Wi-Fi connectivity at the hospitals, schools plus in other buildings belonging to the government. The residents would be able to use the internet facility free of cost. Information is that Mr. Azhagu Pandia Raja is coordinating the various improvement works that are carried out by GCC. He then hinted about how the works have been directly monitored by the chief minister’s office.

Various departments like Civil Supplies and Electricity, agencies like Metro Water, TNSCB etc have been asked to repair and improve the facilities in the tenements. It is learnt that the GCC would be repairing the damaged roads, storm water drains, street lights etc. It would also modernise the e-seva centre. The strengthening of the buildings plus fixing the leakages would be done by the TNSCB.

To strengthen the resident’s welfare associations in every block in places like Perumbakkam, Semmenchery, Kannagi Nagar etc, the government agencies are in talks with the residents.

It must be recalled that just a few weeks back teams of officers visited the resettlement areas in Chennai to assess the damages and to decide on the improvements that were needed. Soon, surveying of the residents by the Civil Supplies and Electricity department would be carried out and issue ration cards to those who haven’t received the ration cards. Point is that CM Health insurance cards would be given by the Health Department. At Perumbakkam, there would be improved sports facilities also. This was mentioned by an official belonging to GCC.

Formation of self help groups:

It is learnt that for the sake of providing social security to the residents the TN government would form self help groups and organise skill development sessions. Every household must have a bank account and this would be ensured also. The Miyawaki method would be used to create urban forests in these places.

A project to devise a slum development plan has started by the GCC along with IIHS, ITDP etc. Here, one slum would be identified and a plan would be prepared by studying that slum. The shocking piece of information is that 48% of the people who have settled in Perumbakkam have lost their jobs.
