The civic body has now taken a decision to create more Montessori classes in the corporation based schools in Chennai!!
Under the Smart City Mission, the Chennai Corporation schools would have 100 such classes as the civic body has decided to create more such facilities. It is known that at present there are just 66 schools in Chennai with Montessori facilities.
As per the source belonging to GCC it was clear that currently 66 corporation schools have Montessori classes and Montessori environments would be created in 44 more schools. Truth is that the Corporation would have 100 Montessori classes.
It is known that CITIIS initiative or City Investments to Innovate, Integrate and Sustain initiative is a part of Smart City Mission and under this new Montessori classes would be developed at a cost of Rs 9 crores. Point is that Montessori classrooms would be set up at the schools with kindergarten classes. Out of total 282 corporation schools in the Chennai city, the GCC runs kindergarten in 200 schools. It is known that these kindergarten classes have around 7000 students. In India, Chennai is the first local body to run Montessori classes.
It must be remembered that a few years back the civic body won Rs 95 crores at the CITIIS challenge conducted by the French government and Union Ministry of Housing Urban and Development. The GCC has decided to focus on upgrading the teaching and learning facilities at the schools rather than renovating the buildings. The source revealed about promoting extracurricular activities, teachers development and communication by using the fund with minor structural works. It is now said that the above decision was taken as the fund requirement was higher than the expected for renovation and other infrastructural works. The GCC would be raising Rs 102 crores through corporate social responsibility and by other ways.
