The residents belonging to north Chennai would be able to view the sea while travelling in the metro trains. On Sunday, the 9km phase-1 metro rail extension project was inaugurated by the PM of India Mr. Narendra Modi. This project would connect north Chennai with the airport and it would have 5 elevated and 2 underground metro stations. This metro train project should have been completed by June 2020 itself but got delayed due to Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown. Residents from north Chennai would be able to go to the airport in just 60 minutes and phase-1 covers a total distance of 54kms. Centre, the state and Japan international Cooperation agency are providing funds for this project is well known. It must be taken into account that the stations that are covered under metro phase 1 extension are New Washermanpet, Toll gate, Kaladipet, Tiruvottriyur and Wimco Nagar.
It is learnt that the elevated metro stations of Tollgate and Tiruvottiyur have been integrated with the existing MTC bus terminus.
An officer belonging to CMRL revealed that around 2lakhs people would commute every day in this stretch. On Sunday, the commuters were allowed to travel free of cost in this stretch from 2pm till 1pm. In the year 2015, former CM of TN, Dr J. Jayalalitha inaugurated the 10km stretch from Koyambedu to Alandur and another stretch from Little Mount to the airport in the year 2016.
It must be recalled that on 10th February 2019 prime minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi inaugurated the 10km stretch between AGDMS and Washermenpet under phase-1.
