Many vehicles along the ECR usually go at high speeds and overtake each other leading to many accidents.
With the Advanced Traffic Management System inaugurated, overspeeding atleast between Mahabalipuram and Chennai would be kept in check.
As a part of TN Road Safety Project, Union Road Transport minister Mr, Nitin Gadkari along with CM of TN Mr. E. Palaniswamy unveiled this Advanced Traffic Management System. An amount of Rs 8.6 crores is spent on this. This system consists of ASES or Automatic Speed Enforcement System, AVIDS or Automatic Video Incident Detection System, VMS or Variable Message Sign Board, CCTV cameras and VASS or Vehicle Actuated Speed Signs plus control room and safety roller barriers.
At 10 locations between Akkarai and Mahabalipuram, ASES poles have been set up. It is learnt that each pole has a 4D tracking radar, flasher, 9MP camera and other video camera. It is clear that over speeding vehicles photos would be captured by the cameras. The owners would get the fine challans immediately as the system is linked with Parivahan.
In different locations, 8 PTZ cameras have been installed for AVIDS and it would warn the arriving vehicles about the wrong direction. The cameras will help the police by taking pictures in case of accidents etc. To give heads up about the stretch condition, Variable Message Sign Boards have been erected across the stretch. To have a real perspective of the stretch, all these systems have been integrated to the control rooms that have been set up near Uthandi toll plaza.
