Where are the customers in the Amma Canteen in north Chennai?

Gone are the days when as many as 2000 customers used to visit Amma Canteens per day in north Chennai!!
BRN Garden belonging to north Chennai has got an Amma canteen run by the greater Chennai Corporation or GCC. The sensational news now is that for a month now this canteen hasn’t had a single customer. The bitter truth is that in 100 Amma canteens in north Chennai the scenes are similar and these canteens bear a deserted look as footfalls have fallen.
These canteens in north Chennai that used to get 2000 customers per day don’t get 100 also now. It is now mentioned that the TN government’s free food during the pandemic has resulted in poor footfalls in Amma canteens now and to poor revenue.
As per a worker belonging to the Amma canteen, during the Covid-19 pandemic when hotels were shut down and free food was offered many thronged Amma canteens. The situation has changed now and many are not willing to pay for food in these canteens.
There are many complaints about the lack of variety at breakfast and dinner at Amma canteens. It is well known that Chennai has got 407 Amma canteens and each division has got atleast two. Many Amma canteens are located near slums railway stations, inside government hospitals etc.
It was revealed by an official that during pandemic lockdown people did not have money but now they have money. He stated that the people prefer to eat food from roadside eateries that provide varieties.
