The news that has come out now is that this week, the wholesale cost of most vegetables would go down and this would bring down the vegetables cost in the neighbourhood retail shops in Chennai also.
It must be noted that the retail cost of the vegetables in Chennai city is usually 20% to 25% more than what they fetch in Koyambedu market complex. The consumers are finding it tough as the prices of few veggies like carrot and shallots etc are being sold twice as much as their wholesale cost.
The cost of vegetables like tomato, potatoes, shallots etc would decrease by Rs 10 to Rs20 per kg and rates of drumstick would reduce by Rs 50 per kg due to increase in the arrivals. For a while now, the price of curry leaves have been in the Rs 50 to Rs 70 range and a bunch of coriander is available for Rs 1 to Rs 3.
This is the harvest season for the vegetables and due to this the prices of carrots and drumsticks have plunged. This was mentioned by Mr. S.S. Muthukumar, president of the Koyambedu Semi Wholesale Traders Association. He then explained about how the carrots usually get procured from the Nilgiris district and how drumsticks get procured from districts like Ariyalur, Cuddalore and Villupuram etc. He threw light on how when compared to the months of November and December last year, now, KYMC has been receiving around 500 trucks of vegetables.
Yesterday, in the retail shops in Adyar, 1 kg of carrot and shallots were sold at Rs 46 and Rs 140 respectively. In Royapettah, one kg of carrots and shallots were sold at Rs 64 and Rs 120 respectively. In both these areas in Chennai, tomatoes and onions were sold at Rs 28 to Rs 30 per kg.
