Govt. Eye Hospital does not do Lasik surgeries

It has come to light that the Government Eye Hospital in Egmore has never conducted a Lasik surgery. This fact is shocking as Lasik surgeries are extremely popular with people who wear glasses or contact lenses. The reason for the lack of this facility is the absence of the right equipment.

‘1,000 patients visit the hospital every day on an average, but there has been a 5 per cent decrease in the number of patients over the years… Lasik surgery is covered under the chief minister’s comprehensive health insurance scheme along with other complex eye treatments like cornea transplant, squint correction and glaucoma surgery. But, the necessary equipment is yet to be provided by the government… (We) have already asked for the government to provide with the machines and have been assured that the hospital would get them soon’, said a hospital official.
