An RTI (Right to Information) application has brought to light that only 3 of the thousands of temporary banners and hoardings in Chennai are legal. M.G. Devasahayam, a social activist and member of Madras High Court appointed monitoring committee for building violations had filed the application.

‘The Collectorate`s claims on removal of hoardings is an eyewash. Most banners and temporary hoardings are put up by political parties. The collectorate does not have the manpower to remove all the illegal banners and hoardings…. Coordination between the collectorate, corporation and police is required to curb the menace. Banners and temporary hoardings have been put up at will in every part of the city despite a Supreme Court ban in 2008. The collectorate can grant permission to erect temporary billboards and banners, but only after they receive a `no objection` certificate from the corporation’, he said.
