The rise in the temperatures has made many residents of Chennai to use air-conditioners, air coolers etc. This has resulted in dry eyes. Many residents are visiting the eye doctors now complaining about issues like dry eyes, itchiness, stickiness, grittiness, irritation etc.
The artificial air and changes in the temperatures could lead to eye issues in the people and this was pointed out by some ophthalmologists. On a daily basis, the residents have been using air-conditioners for about 14 to 16 hours. For the eyes to be healthy, adequate quality and quantity of tears are essential. The eye specialists have explained about how the change in the quality or quantity of 3 layers of a tear film such as oily (exterior), water/aqueous (middle) and protein (inner) could lead to dry eye syndrome in the people.
According to Dr Srinivasan G. Rao, Dr Agarwal Eye Hospital highlighted that in an a/c room especially in low temperatures there is a loss of humidity. Point is that the air would become extremely dry and cause evaporation from the watery layer of the tea film. This would then result in evaporative dry eyes.
It is shocking to mention here that long term exposure could also change the lipid production from the glands located in the eyelids. Lubrication is essential for the eyes to be in good health and without lubrication the eyes become vulnerable to inflammation and other infections etc. It is now said that these air-coolers and air-conditioners must be kept clean for avoiding eye infections.
