The data from the GCC has confirmed that on Wednesday as many as25784 new Covid-19 cases were reported from as many as 1319 streets belonging to Chennai. Around 6 months back, new Covid-19 cases were reported from just 120 streets in Chennai and this increase in the number of streets with this deadly and rapidly spreading infection is worrying many.
It is now said that the Revenue and Disaster Management department had issued an order for the sake of implementation of containment steps in around 900 streets. The Central zone has as many as625 streets with most cases. There is now higher concentration of new cases in zones like Kodambakkam, Teynampet, Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Thiru -Vi- Ka Nagar etc.
Information is that 415 streets of the southern region and 279 streets of northern regions have got Covid-19 cases. The civic body on Wednesday tested as many as17062 samples and 2564 positive cases were identified. The positivity rate was around 15%. It must not be forgotten that in November 2020 the positivity rate was at 5% and just a few weeks back the positivity rate was around 1%.
In those streets where new cases were reported, containment measures have been implemented. This was according to a field officer. He added that steps have been taken to conduct fever clinics near those streets. It is learnt that on Thursday morning, Chennai had 20,144 active cases and Teynampet zone had the highest number (2382) active Coronavirus cases. More than 2000 active cases were also reported from the Anna Nagar zone.
