As a preventive measure to check and prevent the fast and wide-spreading resurgent coronavirus pandemic, the State Government of Tamil Nadu has imposed lockdown restrictions effective from yesterday (Tuesday, 20th April).
100% Lockdown restrictions will prevail from 10.00 PM to 4.00 AM. Further, lockdown is imposed on Sundays.
During the lockdown period, public services such as public and private bus transport, auto and private vehicles WILL NOT OPERATE.
During the lockdown period, buses to other district and states also will not operate
With the above lockdown imposition, changes have been made in the suburban electric train services.
The suburban electric train services in the Chennai Metro City operates under the Chennai Division of Railways. There are a total of 672 train services. As the lockdown has been imposed, this has been brought down from 672 to 434. Southern railways have announced that no suburban electric train services will operate from 10.00 PM to 4.00 AM.
To be more specific, 150 services in the section Chennai Central-Arkonam, 64 services in the section Chennai Central-Gummidipundi, 68 services in the section Chennai Beach-Velacherry, and 152 services in the section Chennai Beach-Tambaram-Chengalpattu will only be operated.
On Sundays, 86 train services will operate in the above-mentioned 4 sections. The trains will be operated at the frequency of once in 2 hours.
It is expected that the field workers on the coronavirus front, workers of essential services, and the Railway employees will avail of the above services.
Usually, the train services function until 12.00 midnight. However, due to the imposition of lockout conditions, train services will stop at 10.00 PM. Again, usually, the suburban train services commence at 3.00 AM. Due to lockdown, they will no commence after 4.00 AM as announced by the Southern Railways.
