Selling of electric vehicles particularly two wheelers has been tremendous now in TN. The reason for this was because of the increase in the prices of fuels. Battery operated scooters are now in huge demand in TN and it is mainly due to the rise in the coast of fuel. The people are thinking about saving the fuel cost and are making a beeline to purchase these battery operate scooters.
As against the 5696 electric vehicles that were registered in the whole of 2020, the battery operated vehicles registration has now touched 9567 on 24th April 2021.This was according to the centralised Vahan database. It is learnt that there were just 3444 e-vehicles registered in the year 2019.
It was mentioned by an officer belonging to Ather Energy’s Experience Centre at Nungambakkam that in the last three-four months the number of inquiries from prospective buyers of electric vehicles has also witnessed a threefold increase. In the whole of 2020, this company was able to sell just 741 e-vehicles and in 2021 the company has sold 766 e-vehicles from January onwards.
The business of number one company Hero Electric Vehicles has been fantastic now in 2021. This company has sold 1702 e-scooters till now in 2021 and in 2020 it was able to sell just 1562 e-scooters.
Mr. Arunkumar, owner of electric scooter spoke about how the cost of an electric scooter was high when compared to normal scooters. He explained that the operational costs of an e-scooter was lower than normal scooters due to huge fuel rates and low electricity prices.
Another important reason that has been cited for the huge demand and sale of electric vehicles was the TN government exempting the battery operated vehicles from paying motor vehicle tax till 2022. This was revealed by a senior official belonging to the transport department.
