According to sources, the State government will finalise auto fares by the end of the month. Officials may hold meetings with auto driver unions before making a decision.
‘Since the apex court has ordered revision of the tariff by July 6 in Tamil Nadu, it will be finalised in a few days, but not before consulting auto drivers. The perplexing task ahead (is) how would (we) handle the tariff hike situation in the event of any further fluctuation in petrol prices’, said an official.
However, trade unions are expecting a hike on the basic fare. ‘On behalf of 11 trade unions, we have submitted a petition to authorities, seeking to fix Rs.30 as the fare for the first 2 km and Rs15 for every additional km… But a slab of Rs 20 as minimum fare and Rs 10 for every additional km is unacceptable as petrol prices have risen many times after we submitted that proposal in 2011’, said J. Seshasayanam, General Secretary, AITUC Auto Drivers’ Federation
