The direct physical classes have been stopped at higher educational institutions now due to the unimaginable rise in the Covid-19 positive cases. Education through online mode has begun once again. It has been brought to light that the students from TN state run colleges and universities are not attending the online classes now.
According to a senior official belonging to the Higher Education Department, many colleges have reported that fewer students were taking part in the online classes now. Reports about the poor attendance have reached the authorities concerned now.
Getting internet connection has been an issue for many students belonging to the rural places in TN. This has been responsible for the reduced participation of the students in the online classes. This was mentioned by the senior official. Information is that just 30% to 40% have been active in the virtual classes. It is very clear that many students were only interested in the direct physical classes. These students were of the view that only by directly interacting with the teachers in the physical classes they would be able to get their doubts cleared.
It was pointed out by Mr. R. Damodharan, Joint Action Council of College Teachers, that many students studying in Chennai colleges were from rural places and due to their poor internet connectivity they were unable to attend online classes. He later shed light on how the participation of the students (in the online classes) was high when TN government offered free internet data for the government and aided colleges. Truth is that currently the students are not utilising this allocated free data for the online classes.
The students preferred direct physical classes than online classes and this was as per Mr. N. Pasupathy, president, AUT. Point is that when the colleges in TN reopened in January most of the colleges reported 90% of the students turning up for attending physical classes. The students who attended the physical classes at that time were happy and felt that direct physical classes were much better than the online classes. The online sessions were not interactive and due to that the participation of the students also came down.
