The residents belonging to the city of Chennai got a huge surprise on Thursday evening!!
Yesterday, around 4pm in the evening, Chennai witnessed sudden thunderstorms after the skyscape was enveloped by dark clouds. Many places in Chennai and its neighbouring districts received rains and this brought some happiness on the faces of many. It must be noted that yesterday morning was bright and sunny.
Temperature around 37 degrees Celsius has been recorded at the weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam. The city got cooled in the evening due to the rains. Till 5:30 pm in the evening, places like Meenambakkam, Chembarambakkam and Villivakkam recorded 2cm of rain but a trace amount of rain was recorded in Nungambakkam. There were 3cm rains recorded in west Tambaram and Sathyabhama University having automatic rain gauges and 1cm rains in YMCA Nandanam. Districts like Vellore, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur etc got thunderstorms yesterday.
Information collected is that on Thursday, Kachirapalayam belonging to the district of Kallakurichi registered 10cm of rain and that was the highest ever rain in a day. Convective activity followed by intense periods of heat during the day was cited as the reason for sudden rains. This was mentioned by some officials belonging to the meteorological department. There would be rains till 24th May in the districts along the Western Ghats and some interior places. This was also brought out by the meteorological department. Till the weekend, coastal areas of Puducherry would be receiving light rains. Point is that till Saturday Chennai might also experience partly cloudy sky and light rains.
