In recent times, there have been few cases of black fungal infection reported in certain states of India. This has made people worry more.

On Thursday, 20th May 2021, the TN government declared black fungus or Mucormycosis as notifiable disease. This was after 9 persons have been found to be infected with this issue.

Health secretary of TN Mr. J. Radhakrishnan has confirmed that currently there are as many as 9 cases of black fungus. Truth is that 6 cases are old and 3 are new cases. In 7 diabetic persons this black fungus is seen now.

He spoke about how this black fungus has been there even before Covid-19 infection began. Point is that those with uncontrolled diabetes and consuming steroids and in ICUs for long time periods were more susceptible for this black fungus.

A 10 member Mucormycosis committee has been formed with many senior medical professionals. They would be discussing the various measures that needed to be taken to control this black fungus disease.

It is now brought to light that all the hospitals would immediately inform the government if they come across black fungus cases. This is the main advantage of announcing black fungus as a notifiable disease. By this, the administration would know about the place or district reporting more such cases. There is no need to panic regarding this black fungus disease and people must not believe the rumours in the social media platforms about this disease. This was mentioned by the health secretary. In the states like Maharashtra and Rajasthan, the intensity of black fungus disease is more now.

Amphotericin- B injections are used to treat black fungus disease and the TN government had placed orders to procure more such medicines. Information is that the health department is also concentrating on other diseases during Covid-19 infection pandemic.
