The superb efforts or measures taken by the Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC to control the spread of Covid-19 infection in Chennai are paying huge dividends now.
The alarming increase in the Coronavirus cases has been brought under control now and the pandemic has been subdued in Chennai. The test positivity rate or TPR in Chennai has reduced to less than 2% and the number of active cases has gone down below 5000 now. It must be remembered that on 21st May Chennai had as many as 49,236 Covid-19 active cases and the active cases began to reduce from then onwards.
On Friday evening, the State Health Department released a bulletin and according to that it was clear that the number of active cases in Chennai has gone down to 3360.Truth is that Chennai added just 492 new cases as against 1762 recoveries. The number of active cases went down by more than 1300 than it was just a day before. The number of active cases was just 0.63% of the total cases reported in Chennai and this was as on Friday. Out of the 15 GCC zones, only Kodambakkam zone had the highest number of active cases and that was 504. It is learnt that this Kodambakkam zone was the only zone with more than 500 active cases.
As many as 6GCC zones have less than 200 active Covid-19 cases and north Chennai based Manali zone has got 109 active cases that was the lowest. This was as per the data belonging to GCC.
On 11th May 2021, Chennai city had a TPR of 27.7% and it worried many. On Thursday, 17th June, TPR in Chennai was just 1.91%. This drastic fall in TPR has made many happy now. As on 16th of June, the number of streets in Chennai with more than 10 Coronavirus cases has reduced to 10. It is now brought out that of those 4 are in the Adyar zone and 3 in Kodambakkam zone. Other GCC zones like Teynampet, Tondiarpet and Ambattur have one such street each. It is important to note that there are 99 streets with more than 6 cases.
