People going to the Chennai airport cannot miss the swanky new terminal that has been coming up between the domestic and international terminals. In this new terminal, there would be as many as 140 check-in counters, 38 self service kiosks, 108 immigration counters and 10 baggage conveyors.
It is learnt that the construction of the building has been completed and more than 70percent of wavy roofing has been installed. Glass panels have been installed by AAI on the facade of the terminal. On the airside of the building, roofing work has been completed and interior work has started. The pillars and ceiling (near the space where security checks and boarding gates are coming up) would have some superb interior work on them. Technicians have been fixing panels on the frontage of the building on the city side and a crane is helping these technicians to do the work.
It was later brought to light by an official belonging to AAI that a portion of the roof of the main building and adjacent smaller building had been installed. He hinted that the rest of the work would be over in a few weeks. People would be surprised to see huge vents for natural lighting on the roof in this new terminal. This is not present in the existing terminals at the Chennai airport.
It is really amazing to mention here that this new terminal (used by both domestic and international passengers) would increase the passenger capacity from 21 million passengers to 35 million passengers per year.
Point is that the new terminal building was supposed to be completed in April month itself but it would be completed by the year. September 202 was the original deadline for the completion is known. The pace of the work has been speeded up and this was confirmed by an officer and it would be inaugurated by AAI by early 2022.
