On Friday, 25TH June, the first review meeting of the planning authority took place and minister for housing and urban development Mr. S. Muthuswamy discussed the expansion of CMA or Chennai Metropolitan Area. It is well known that he is also the chairman of Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority or CMDA.
It is learnt that the CMDA officials have been directed to ensure that planning permissions must be given within 60 days and delays must be avoided. There were also some discussions regarding the up keeping of the Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex. For the discussion, issues pertaining to the third master plan for CMA have been taken up. After discussing the practical issues and eliciting the opinion of the residents of the respective localities, a decision on the areas that could be added would be taken up. Some areas would be kept outside the purview of CMA.
For the past 3 years, expansion of CMA has been hanging in balance regarding whether the proposed 8878 sq km of Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur districts and part of Ranipet district could be added to the metropolis. Information is that at present CMA spans a distance of 1189 sq km covering Chennai and its suburbs. The officials have been directed to prepare the third master plan so that a new master plan would be ready by the year 2026. This was mentioned by the minister for housing and urban development, Mr. S. Muthuswamy. Point is that the validity of the second master plan ends by the year 2026.
