For a long time, the Maduravoyal- Sriperumbudur stretch in Chennai-Bengaluru highway has been overflowing with traffic. This has been making lives of many difficult is known.
It is now mentioned that the state highways National Highway or NH wing would be taking up six- laning of a 23.5 km arterial stretch with service roads present on either sides of the highway.
Presently, there is only 4-lane here in this bust stretch and it would be widened into a six lane for ensuring free flow of traffic. This has been mentioned by some sources belonging to the highways department.
It is worth mentioning here that this important stretch in Chennai-Bengaluru highway witnesses a traffic flow of more than 2lakhs passenger car units every day. The ever increasing traffic volume has led to slow vehicle movement here. It is very clear that the current four lane road and service road in some parts of the stretch has become inadequate for this ever increasing traffic.
An amount of Rs 420 crores would be spent for the widening works including service roads present on either side of the highway along with the storm water drains on both sides. The sources have mentioned that bids have been invited and minor encroachments would be removed once the work begins. It is now revealed that there is no need of land acquisition for 6-lane as the highways have 60m right of way to lay even an 8-lane road.
To ease traffic congestion in the stretch with industries and educational institutions, NHAI has proposed to construct an elevated road from Maduravoyal to Sriperumbudur. This would be a part of Bengaluru- Chennai Expressway project. Bids have been invited for all the stretches from Bengaluru to Chennai via Chittoor. It is now revealed that the elevated work could be taken up only after widening the present main carriageway.
