Increase in the minimum fares in the buses in Tamil Nadu - Regular commuters unhappy

The minimum fares in the government buses in TN were Rs 5 previously. Now, this has been raised to Rs 10.

It must be taken into note that the government buses would allow free commuting for women passengers and would collect bus fares from men passengers only. It was pointed out by some regular government bus users that the state transport corporation was illegally overcharging male passengers to cover the additional expenses incurred towards free bus commute for women passengers.

Information collected is that TNSTC Villupuram (that has been running town and mofussil bus services in Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram) would be correcting this mistake. Few years back, TNSTC had stopped operating town buses to interior places due to poor patronage and just mofussil services were being operated. Truth is that women could travel free only in the town buses but not in the mofussil buses. From the Tiruvallur bus stand, TNSTC mofussil bus services start and they have boards that mention that women could travel free in them also.

Mr. Senthil, resident-activist from iyyapanthangal in Chennai spoke about how the buses must come under town bus service and the minimum fare was Rs 5. He added that if the buses continued to collect Rs 10 per head then it cannot allow women passengers to travel free of cost.

Truth is that such types of violations have become common in town buses from Tiruvallur to Uthukottai, Periapalayam, Ramacheri, Kanchipadi , Sriperumbudur routes. He later threw light on two types of mofussil bus services like ordinary and express buses.
