Vice Chancellor of SRM University M. Ponnavaiko has said that green house emissions by companies, products and persons involved in the internet and ICT industries will double by 2020.
Mr. Ponnavaiko was inaugurating the ‘Green ICT 2013’ conference at the Pondicherry Engineering College. ‘The internet and ICT industry annually produce more than 830 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2), the main GHG and this is expected to double by 2020. Further, the global carbon emissions related to Personal computers and laptops, which is accounted for 48.5 percent of all global ICT emissions in 2009, will quadruple by 2020, if the ICT industry continues with business as usual. ICTs presently account for approximately 0.86 metric giga tones of carbon emissions annually. The emissions from the manufacture and use of OCs along will double over the next 12 years as middle class buyers in emerging economies go digital. Similarly, worldwide growth in the use of mobile phones will triple their carbon foot print by 2020. The fastest increasing contributor to carbon emissions will be as a result of growth in the number and size of data centres’, he said.
