The BIS or Bureau of Indian Standards have announced that all the gold jewellery that is sold in the shops should have 6 digit identity numbers as hallmark stamps. This has not gone down well with the owners of various jewellery shops belonging to the state of TN. They have been protesting against this order from BIS.

As a result, the jewellery shop owners in TN have shut down their shops from 9am to 11:30 am yesterday, 23rd of August 2021. It must be noted that the jewellery shop owners have written say no to hallmark on the placards while demonstrating on the roads.

In the busy T. Nagar locality, there are many jewellery shops present is well known. Yesterday from 9am to 11am these shops were shut down as the owners participated in their protests.

It is worthy to mention that the hallmark in gold jewellery is important and essential. Point is that not giving importance to quality but giving importance to how the jewellery was made plus selling details etc through hallmark were not essential. After selling the jewels, the number cannot be removed. It is worthy to note here that converting one form of jewellery to another form would not be possible also. There are many issues in this hallmark number.
