In the normal circumstances, the paediatric wards belonging to the government hospitals in TN would be receiving many patients from other states. Things have changed now and there is a threat of a third Coronavirus infection wave also. Point is that the number of paediatric cases that used to come from other neighbouring states like Kerala, AP etc have reduced in the government hospitals in Tamil Nadu.
It was mentioned by the authorities of the government hospitals that most of the non-pandemic cases now are either emergency cases from Chennai or surgeries.
According to Dr. Mohan Kumar, head of paediatric surgery at Stanley Medical College Hospital, Chennai, for cancer treatments, elective surgeries etc hospitals used to receive many patients in the past from Kerala, AP, Telangana etc. He added that atleast 30% to 40% paediatric cases used to come to the government hospitals especially Institute of Child Health or ICH in Chennai from Nellore or Chittoor etc. The number of patients have become less now due to LACK OF transportation plus Coronavirus regulations etc.
As per Dr. R. Shanti Malar, dean of KMCH, Chennai, it was clear that not many patients come for treatment from other states just like they did in the past. She explained how the public were concerned about the Covid-19 infection spread during travelling. It must be noted that the Chennai hospital authorities are also highly concerned regarding admitting the patients from the other states. To prevent any spread of Covid-19 infection, the hospital authorities have been mandating Covid-19 tests from the Kerala state patients.
