To cater to Chennai city’s increasing water requirement, the popular Madurantakam Lake near Chennai would be rejuvenated with additional storage capacity by the WRD or water resources department. It is brought out that the water body would be improved as the drinking water source.
One of the largest irrigation water bodies belonging to Chengaplet is Madurantakam Lake is a well known fact. It is now said that WRD would take a different approach in its restoration efforts.
The WRD officials mentioned that the height of 6 weirs would be raised as de-silting alone would not help in increasing the storage capacity. Point is that weirs are structures that allow the surplus water to flow out. Now, the storage capacity of this lake has reduced to 530 mcft. As per an official it was clear that the storage capacity would be increased to 790 mcft. It is known that Madurantakam Lake serves as an irrigation source for an ayacut area of nearly 1154.39 hectares.
