The demand for vegetables and flowers has come down drastically at the Koyambedu market in Chennai. This has made the traders to dump the unsold vegetables and flowers on the roads. It is brought out that there is 30percent drop in the demand here.

It must be taken into account that some traders dumped vegetables and flowers on the roads inside the market and other traders have been sending their stocks to biomethanation plants. Every day, on an average, this Koyambedu market gets 400 to 500 truckloads of vegetables.

The festive season hasn’t yet started and due to this reason only the vegetables and flowers get wasted now. Truth is that sales have dropped by 20to 30% due to the above reason and this was pointed out by some wholesalers. At this wholesale market, vegetables get sold for Rs20 per kg to Rs 30 per kg except for a few vegetables like carrots. Information is that carrot gets sold for Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kilo.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, the demand from commercial establishments, hotels, catering services etc have dropped by 50%. This was according to Mr. Chandran, president, Koyambedu Market Licensed Merchant’s Association. He threw light on how the same quantity of stocks is received every day and how the old stock cannot be kept for more than a day. Vegetables like tomatoes, ladies finger, brinjal etc are sold at Rs 15 per kilo. The shocking truth is that few traders have dumped tomatoes due to lack of buyers. To keep the market clean and neat, traders have been asked by the Federation of all Associations of Koyambedu Periyar Market to collect vegetable stock in sacks.

It was brought out by Mr. G.D. Rajasekaran, president of the federation said that during summer poor quality vegetables might have been sold at low prices. He added that in this season vegetables perish fast and wastage gets increased.
