Recently, the cardiology department belonging to the popular KMCH or Kilpauk Medical College Hospital in Chennai celebrated World Heart Day. Awareness on healthy eating and exercise to maintain a healthy heart was created.

The improper diet, sedentary lifestyle and stress have been responsible for more heart attacks and for other non-communicable diseases in us. Information gathered is that KMCH created awareness among the patients/attendants by asking them to take a 30minutes of brisk walking, jogging or swimming for atleast 5 days per week.

In the year 1989, the department of cardiology was set up in KMCH and it receives 13000 new outpatients plus 45000 old outpatients annually. It is learnt that around 900 patients are admitted in KMCH and nearly 12000 ECG or echo-cardiographs are performed every year. Two thousand procedures such as angioplasty, angiograms, pacemaker implants etc have been conducted just within two and half years of establishing a catheterisation lab at this KMCH.
