With the number of Coronavirus infection cases decreasing in Chennai now and more passengers are using flights to reach their destinations, the Chennai airport is getting ready to handle more domestic as well as international flights in a few months of time.

With a single ground handling agency, the airport must handle both cargo as well as the passenger aircraft efficiently. It is known that a single ground handling agency carries out jobs like handling baggage to assisting airlines on tarmac. In December in 2020, the previous contractor Bhadra’s term ended and Air India Airport services took over as ground handling agency.

Till last year, 2 firms were used for ground handling purposes but now there is only one operator firm. This was from the Airport authority of India or AAI. According to an official belonging to AAI, currently there are 200 to 230 domestic flights, 30 to 40 international and 20 to 25 cargo flights and this is just half of pre-Covid traffic. Till now, there has been no problem and the Chennai airport has been able to do its work efficiently. He later threw light on how from early 2022 there would be more flights and with adequate addition of manpower the airport would be able to handle without any issue.

Information collected is that the staff of the ground handling agency were being trained regularly to handle the situation whenever there was an increase in the number of flights. This could be challenging and this was as per some officials belonging to AAI.
