The Tamil Nadu government has decided to form a tri partite committee to come to a fair decision about auto rates in Chennai. The committee, which will consist of representatives of drivers’ unions, passenger associations and transport department officials, will decide a fair price for auto fares.
‘(We are) not going to fix the tariff in a hasty manner as they were determined not to see any more haggling over auto rickshaw fares on city roads. We have to be very careful while determining the fares as it should be reasonable for all concerned… At the moment, we can firmly say that the minimum fare is not going to be Rs 20, as reported in a section of the media. It could be a little higher than speculated and this will be finalised after holding discussions with the stakeholders’, say sources.
