With deepavali just round the corner, many people from Chennai would be going to their natives to celebrate the festival with their families etc. For the sake of these, the Chennai metro trains would function till midnight on 2nd and 3rd November.
It is now brought out that the evening peak hour service with 5 minute headway from 5pm to 8pm has been extended now till 10pm. There would also be metro train services available for the public till 12pm in the midnight as the services have been extended from 11pm to 12pm now. There would be a 15 minute headway. Point is that this extension of metro train services would be only for 2nd and 3rd November.
Many would take metro trains to reach Chennai Central or Chennai Egmore railway stations plus CMBT bus terminus and airport to go to their native places across Tamil Nadu. This was according to an officer belonging to CMRL. The number of passengers travelling by metro trains in Chennai has gone up every month ever since 21st June when CMRL began its services after Coronavirus second infection wave. In the month of July, the number of passengers who used metro trains was 18.46 lakhs and in August it was 22.74 lakhs.
Around 26.86 lakhs travelled by metro trains in September and the patronage increased to 29.7lakhs in the month of October.
Truth is that inspite of gradual increase in the patronage from June to October the daily average has not touched pre-Covid levels of 1.16lakhs per day.
