The government of Tamil Nadu would be floating a tender for Rs 660 crores Chennai Metropolitan Area Intelligent Transport Systems Installation project. The main aim behind this was to make the roads in Chennai safer for motorists and commuters.

To build an efficient traffic system in Chennai to meet the increasing demands in the CMA, a tender would be floated for this project after approval is got from Smart City Board or SCB. This was as per some official sources. More improvements have been sought by the TN government and due to this reason the tender that was supposed to be floated by the end of January has been delayed for about 10 months.

It was pointed out by an official that SCB needed some modifications and improvements and it would be carried out by a consultant. He hinted that the cost of the project would remain the same. In more places in Chennai, SCB wanted the bus information system. Point is that the system is being developed with GPS devices on government buses synchronised with geo-coded bus stops.

The road congestion status would be known to the passengers beforehand by this. The expected time of travel would also be available on various routes in Chennai. Information is that the detailed project report or DPR is ready now. An amount of Rs 465 crores would be provided by Japan based JICA and Rs 195 crores would be provided by the state of Tamil Nadu.

The project would include components such as Chennai Traffic Information System, Traffic Management System and City Bus System. Traffic control and management would be increased by the Traffic Information and Management System. An effective information regarding traffic would be provided for the motorists and others. At about 165 junctions in the Chennai city, ATCS or adaptive traffic control system would be installed.
