The festival of joy or deepavali has finished now and people are returning back to their normal lives!!

It must be noted that every year on Deepavali day people burst lots of crackers to celebrate the festival. On 4th November too crackers were burst.

It is now said that in 2021 GCC has collected the highest cracker waste than it did in the last 5 years. This has surprised many now. On Thursday and on Friday till 12 noon, 138.21 tonnes of cracker waste was collected. It is learnt that GCC had collected 85 tonnes of cracker waste in 2017, 95 tonnes in 2018, 103 tonnes in 2019 and 98 tonnes in 2020.This was according to a data from the Chennai Corporation .The data has clearly shown that the residents of Chennai have burst more crackers on the deepavali day.

Now, the waste collection is highly coordinated and this has been responsible for the high amounts of cracker waste collection in Chennai city. This was pointed out by an officer belonging to GCC.

More crackers were burst in places with affluent populations in Chennai. In Teynampet, 19.58 tonnes of cracker waste has been collected by GCC and this is the highest. From Adyar and Valasaravakkam, 15.33 tonnes and 14 tonnes of cracker waste respectively has been collected.

Lesser cracker waste of 8.75 tonnes and 6.04 tonnes were generated from densely populated Tondiarpet and Royapuram respectively in north Chennai. It was later revealed by a release from the Chennai Corporation that the cracker waste has been sent to the hazardous waste processing unit at Gummidipoondi for safe disposal.

On Thursday, a total of 4312.40 tonnes of garbage and 499.7 tonnes of construction waste were generated and 454.64 tonnes of garbage waste was sent to processing centres. This was according to a press release from the Chennai Corporation.
