Heavy rains have brought Chennai city almost to standstill now!!

The residents of Chennai are finding it difficult due to the heavy rains now. To add to their woes, the rates of autos and cabs have shot up now in Chennai.

It is worthy to note that the suburban trains did not operate in Chennai and just 10% of MTC buses were on the roads yesterday. Information collected is MTC that usually operates 3100 buses daily and had operated just 400 buses on Sunday. The traffic diversions plus subways closure have made many MTC bus drivers unable to complete their trips yesterday.

The other modes of transport like autos and cabs were in huge demand yesterday. The shocking truth is that the fares for longer distances were atleast 200% more than the usual fares.

Normally, a person would be able to travel from Tambaram to Madipakkam by paying fare Rs 250 to Rs300 even in the peak hours but the drivers demanded Rs 500 on Sunday. This was brought out by a resident belonging to Madipakkam.

Many passengers did not have any other option except to pay a huge amount to autos and cabs as the southern railways had shifted the departure of certain long distance trains from Central station to Tiruvallur, Avadi, Beach, Tiruvottriyur and Perambur etc.

It was later mentioned by a resident- activist from Avadi that the departures of trains were delayed by atleast 3 to 4 hours at Central station. The status of the suburban trains could not be got as there was no reliable helpline to provide information. More than 16000 buses were operated to Chennai from other districts by SETC and 6 other transport corporations. The CM of Tamil Nadu, Mr, M.K. Stalin has asked the people not to rush back to Chennai due to the prediction of more rains for the next 2days in Chennai.
