Chembarambakkam is amongst one of the reservoirs that supplies drinking water to the residents of Chennai. The continuous downpour has led to an increase in the water levels in this reservoir now.
It is now brought out by Mr. Duraimurugan minister for TN water resources that release from Chembarambakkam reservoir would be increased depending on the rainfall in the lakes catchment area. The minister inspected Chembarambakkam Lake a day after water was released.
He spoke about how 1000 cubic per second of water was released first and how it had reached the sea before morning. He mentioned that he went to the mouth of the river to check if it was de-silted properly. It must be taken into note that currently the discharge from Chembarambakkam is 2000 cusecs.
Protection of water bodies is very important and all sluice gates here would be opened if the rainfall increases as predicted. The minister explained how it was essential to protect the water bodies or else it would cause a huge disaster. The situation here is being watched closely by the officials. The water resources minister later revealed that the collectors were asked about whether the people living close to banks of the water bodies would get affected or not by rains and release of water. Truth is that there would not be much impact on the public. He concluded that the people living close to the banks of rivers and canals must cooperate. It is known that according to the court verdict there must not be any encroachment of water bodies.
