To face floods in Chennai, telecommunication companies are getting ready now!!

Six years ago in 2015, the city of Chennai had floods and it turned the lives of the residents upside down. It has been raining very heavily now in Chennai for quite some time and floods are expected in Chennai city this time.

Unlike in the 2015 floods, where the telecommunication was very bad (as the exchanges across Chennai went down) in 2021 the telecommunication companies have been making arrangements so that the connectivity doesn’t get affected in Chennai.

The chief general manager of BSNL, Mr. V.K. Sanjeevi explained about how heavy rains on Sunday has affected 15 telephone exchanges including Adyar Telephone Exchange and how all of them have been running well. He added that steps have been taken to make sure that the water ingress doesn’t happen again.

It must be taken into account that out of 372 telephone exchanges under Chennai circles (Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpet districts) there are some in the low lying places.

Point to be noted is that if the flood water raises more then 3 or 4 feet then the equipment would automatically shut with power connection getting switched off. The important piece of information is that the telephone companies have been installing batteries and generators so that Chennai city remains connected through broadband, wireless or through mobile network.

In urban areas belonging to Chennai, BSNL would have battery support for 4 hours and later generators would be available. Truth is that other operators like Airtel etc are making sure that their services don’t black out.
