Heavy rains and water borne diseases are inseparable and it is common to see water borne diseases affecting the public after heavy rains. The news that has emerged out now is that CMWSSB or Chennai Metro Water Sewage and Supplies Board have doubled the testing of drinking water samples to prevent water borne diseases.

To test the quality of water as many as 4000 samples have been taken now in Chennai city by the metro water department. This was according to an officer belonging to CMWSSB. As per an official; it was clear that in the past just 10 per depot samples were taken for testing and now 20 samples per depot have been taken for testing. Truth is that water contamination in Chennai is lower now than in the past. He then spoke about how sewage pipes have been damaged due to increased sewage and rain water flow.

Pumping of sewage water is being carried out now from the streets. Every day throughout the year, the metro water would test for contamination and chlorine content in drinking water. Sewage mixed with water has been reported in certain places like Kodungaiyur etc. Public has been issued an advisory by the corporation of Chennai asking them to boil water and drink on rainy days.
