It seems that the health department’s advice to the Chennai residents regarding wearing face masks without fail in public places have fallen into deaf ears now!!

The shocking piece of information that has come out now is that over the last few weeks there has been a huge drop in the face mask compliance in Chennai. The number of fresh Covid-19 cases have been falling steeply now in Chennai and in Tamil Nadu. In this scenario, wearing of facemasks has gone down amongst the residents of Chennai. Truth is that many are neither wearing facemasks nor wearing it properly especially in the public places in Chennai.

Information is that people visiting the grocery stores or those travelling in buses and trains do not follow Covid-019 protocols strictly now in Chennai. In north Chennai, people in many crowded commercial streets do not wear facemasks now. The recent floods have diverted the focus from Covid-19 protocols as many were highly concerned only about water entering their houses. This was as per an official. He then shed light on the enforcement teams with sanitary inspectors imposing penalties for mask compliance in Chennai.

From pre deepavali times, the face mask compliance started to go down in the Chennai city and this was mentioned by Dr. Prabhdeep Kaur, deputy director, ICMR-NIE. She added that the people must wear facemasks compulsorily in closed environments like departmental stores, textile showrooms etc. Point is that those with co-morbid conditions must always wear facemasks despite receiving 2 doses of vaccination also to protect them.
