Is Amma Water still functioning now in Tamil Nadu?

Most of us during our trips to other places in TN would have purchased Amma water for Rs 10 from the bus stands etc. Times have changed and now the transport department has stopped selling Amma water in Tamil Nadu. It is worthy to note that the sales outlets in the bus stands have been converted into time offices now. The Amma canteens are running successfully now for the sake of the public and food items are sold at subsidised rates is known.

The mineral water plant at Gummidipoondi recently became non-operative and as a result of that production and sale of Amma Kudineer was also stopped. It must be taken into note that this mineral water plant at Gummidipoondi was the one and only water bottle producing plant in the entire Tamil Nadu.  It was brought out by some official sources that the previous government wanted to revamp the plant but the present government hasn`t done anything to revamp the plant.

On 15th September 2013 Amma Water was launched in the bus stands for the purpose of providing the commuters high quality drinking water at affordable cost.  Truth is that Amma water was sold for Rs 10 per litre whereas other companies sold their water for Rs 20 to Rs 25 per litre.

The state express transport corporation or SETC was responsible for the distribution of Amma Kudineer bottles in Tamil Nadu.  Three lakhs litres of water per day was initially proposed to be produced but due to the lack of ground water just 90000 to 1.5litres per day were only produced.

Mud and soil got accumulated on the water filters and due to this the water bottle manufacturing was disrupted in 2019.This had huge impact on the Gummidipoondi water bottle plant and just 45000 litres of water per day was produced.
