With the recent depression zone having crossed the coast early morning yesterday (Friday, 19th November) between Chennai Metro City and Puducherry, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has now i8nformed that there are prospects for heavy rains in 1 or 2 places in 6 districts in Tamil Nadu today (Saturday, 20th November) due to the cyclonic format which is prevailing over the upper layers of the atmosphere.
The earlier low-pressure zone that developed over the Andaman Sea on 13th November intensified into a deep depression zone and it started crossing the coast day-before-yesterday (Thursday, 18th November) at 1.30 AM between the Chennai Metro City and Puducherry.
The vital section of the depression zone crossed the coast between 3.00 AM and 4.00 AM. The whole depression zone crossed the coast by 5.30 AM.
Once this depression zone crossed the coast, it weakened and transformed into a cyclonic format over the upper layers of the atmosphere over the South Andhra and Tamil Nadu!
As such, the Indian Meteorological Department has informed that there are prospects for rain in Tamil Nadu from today (Saturday, 20th November) until Tuesday (23rd November).
Prospects for heavy rain in 6 districts
As above, IMD has informed that there are prospects for heavy rains with lightning and thunder in the 6 districts of Nilgiri, Erode, Krishnagiri, Salem, Ariyalur, and Perambalur and prospects for widespread mild rain in the other districts and Puducherry.
As regards tomorrow (Sunday, 21st November), there are prospects for heavy rain in 1 or 2 places in the districts of Ariyalur, Perambalur, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, and the delta districts and there are prospects for widespread mild rains in other districts and Puducherry.
As regards Monday ((22nd November) and Tuesday (23rd November), there are prospects for heavy rain in 1 pr 2 places in the southern districts and the interior districts and prospects for widespread mild rain in the other districts and Puducherry.
As regards Chennai Metro City, the sky will generally remain cloudy today (Saturday, 20th November) and there are prospects for mild rain in 1 or 2 places in the city.
Heavy rains in 5 locations
As at 8.30 AM on Thursday (18th November), until 8.30 AM yesterday (Friday, 19th November) during 24 hours, there have been very very heavy rains in 5 locations in Tamil Nadu, and very heavy rains in37 locations, and heavy rains in 66 locations!
As per above, the rainfall r recorded in various locations:
Maximum rainfall of 22 cm has been recorded in Tindivanam, Koliyanur, Vallam, and Valavanur, 21 cm rain has been recorded in Manampundi.
Rainfall in other places: Mugaiyur-20 cm, Puducherry, Ananthapuram, Vengur- 19 cm, Villupuram, Thirukkovilur, Sneji, Marakkanam-18 cm, Vaanur-16 cm, Thiruvannamalai-15 cm, Uthiramerur, Thandarampattu, Cuddalore, Oothankarai, and Vembakkam- 14 cm.
Prospects for more rains next week!
Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that as a continuation of the prevailing weather, there are prospects for more rains recorded than normal! When inquiring the reasons for the same, the officials shared:
“There are prospects for a cyclonic format to be developed over the East Bay of Bengal. Due to this, there are prospects for rain in Tamil Nadu on 27th November!”
