On Thursday, a new GO or government order was passed and according to the GO it is now compulsory to write names and initials in Tamil in all the documents of the government. This would include the documents belonging to schools and colleges also. The objective behind this was to encourage Tamil usage while writing names and initials.

It is important to mention that the state has urged the students as well as school managements to fill names and initials in the school and colleges admission forms, attendance registers and in the school and colleges leaving certificates etc in Tamil. It is now said that this new practice by the students would make them love the Tamil language from a very young age.  It is learnt that when the students put their signatures while obtaining certificates they would be encouraged to put their names and initials in Tamil.

Point to be noted is that the announcement to make Tamil compulsory in writing names and initials in Tamil was made in the Assembly by Mr. Thangam Thenarasu, minister for industries and Tamil development. The minister had mentioned that steps would be taken to write the names and initials in Tamil in school, colleges and in all government documents.

Later, the director of Tamil development gave a host of recommendations to implement the announcement from the minister in his letter dated 15th September. It is worthy to note that the TN government has clarified about the earlier order mandating all the government officers signing in Tamil would be stressed along with using Tamil in their initials.
