With rains not there, the supply of tomatoes from other states has increased now in the Chennai market.
The tomatoes are being sold for Rs 40 to Rs 50 now in the Koyambedu wholesale market is known. This has been possible due to the arrival of tomatoes from Adoni in Kurnool district of AP and from other states in north India. The peak winter would come soon and the prices of tomatoes might not increase any further. This was as per some tomato traders. It is learnt that the price of tomatoes might go down to Rs10 to Rs 20 in a month of time.
Mr. M. Thiagarajan, president of Koyambedu Vegetable Fruit and Flower Sellers Association spoke about how during the winter season harvest would be better.
Mr. Abdul Khader, secretary of Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants Association mentioned that the retail prices of tomatoes were around Rs 70 per kilo on Tuesday. It must be noted that the prices of other vegetables continue to increase at the Koyambedu wholesale market. In this market, brinjal was sold for Rs 90 per kilo and ladies finger between Rs60 to Rs 80 per kilo. He was hoping that the prices of other vegetables would decrease after the Pongal festival.
