Harassment of women passengers in the buses in Tamil Nadu would soon become a thing of the past!! Thanks to the new rules!!
Buses are one of the most common and highly preferred modes of transport for many in Tamil Nadu. People find it comfortable while traveling in the buses. Bitter truth is that the women passengers face many issues while traveling in the buses and there are multiple cases of women getting harassed in the buses.
Now, the transport department has empowered the drivers and conductors of the buses to alight those passengers who trouble women commuters by singing or by making inappropriate gestures etc.
A draft gazette notification was released by the home transport department amending the TN Motor Vehicle Rules 1989 with respect to sections 28 and 38 of Motor Vehicle Act 1988 regarding the responsibilities of the drivers and conductors. It is now revealed that the amendment would come into effect within 30 days from the date of draft publication.
Till now, men commuters who were harassing the women commuters inside the buses were going scot free but not anymore due to the new rules. Hereafter, the bus drivers and conductors would have the power to throw out anybody who harasses the women commuters.
According to a senior official belonging to the transport department, ensuring smooth operation of the buses is important and it would be the responsibility of the drivers and conductors to make the trip smooth for the passengers. He added that the powers of drivers and conductors have been increased now to regulate the behavior of the occupants.
It is important to mention here that as per the amendment the bus crew have been restricted from questioning or touching women commuters. Hereafter, the bus crew would not be able to touch women passengers under the excuse of helping them to board or de-board etc. The notification has mentioned that the bus crew must not behave in an annoying manner with the women passengers.
Recently, there were many complaints from the women passengers regarding harassment and humiliation by bus crew etc. The new rule has come at the right time to help the women passengers.
