The Omicron variant cases have been rising and as many as 23 cases have been treated by the doctors at Guindy based government hospital at the Kings Institute.

The doctors spoke about how the precautions and treatment protocols in place were the same as for other SARS CoV2 variants. This new variant could spread faster than the previous other variants and the doctors want the public to be very careful now. Though the transmissibility of the variant is high, its severity is less.

Truth is that the doctors have not witnessed even one single case of severity in the patients affected by the new variant and there was no need of oxygen support also. Mild symptoms like cold, sore throat etc were witnessed in not only the vaccinated patients but also in those who have not got vaccinated. This was according to Dr, Malarvizhi assistant professor at the hospital. She threw light on the speed with which Omicron spreads from one person to another. It must be noted that the contacts of index cases have tested positive within a day after index cases turned positive. She concluded that if there was a rise in the caseload then severity would also increase.

There is no need to panic and following Covid-19 protocols is very important. This was mentioned by Dr. K. Narayanaswamy, director of the hospital. He then spoke about how wearing facemasks correctly plus getting vaccinated, maintaining social distance and washing hands frequently could help us to avoid getting the infection. It is true that if the people follow these then doctors and the government could get relief.

S gene drop is the marker for the variant and on Sunday as many as 63 persons with this condition were admitted in the Guindy based hospital for treatment. Not only locals, but also international travelers who were tested positive on arrival were also isolated at this hospital.

It was brought out by Dr. Vigneswaran of this hospital that the hospital has been ensuring those confirmed or suspected with Omicron variant do not mingle with other Covid19 patients. Truth is that the Omicron infected patients are being segregated as soon as they enter the hospital.
