Hello Chennaites!! A sensational piece of news for you regarding Chennai expansion plan!!
The news that has come out is that the scope of expansion of CMA or Chennai Metropolitan Area would be reduced by more than half of what was proposed in the beginning. Earlier, 8878 sq km was supposed to be covered under CMA but now CMR would cover just 4100 sq km, which is 47%.
According to an official source it was clear that administering a larger area would be very difficult and hence the reduction in the size of expansion of CMA. He later shed light on how the new proposal has been submitted to the government already and how approval is awaited now.
It is learnt that Arakkonam, Pallipattu, Tiruttani, Cheyyar and other taluks that were supposed to be added with CMA would be left out. The expanded CMA would have Kundrathur, Sriperumbudir, Vandalur etc. Now, many persons who visit the CMDA head office at Egmore for some urgent purposes travel long distances to reach the office. It is now said that in future this issue would not be there as regional or zonal offices would be established and it would be similar to the Directorate of Town and Country Planning.
Many discussions were held with various realtors, residents and farmers ever since 2018 the year in which the expansion plan was notified. The plan could not be implemented and it ran into rough weather because many were of the view that rapid urbanization would damage the water bodies
It is worthy to note that after the DMK party came into power an announcement was made that the expansion plan would be carried out. Point is that the planning authority has reduced the extent of expansion to 8300 sq kms. Information is that currently CMA is spread across an area of 1189 sq km.
