In the Ottanchathiram wholesale market, tomato prices shot up and tomato was sold at double the price from Rs. 46/- per kg to Rs. Rs. 82/- per kg!
The arrival of tomato trucks reduced in Ottanchathiram wholesale market over the last 2 days. This has led to a steep rise in the price of tomatoes! Due to shortage, the traders did not get sufficient stock of tomatoes.
As such, they auctioned the sale of tomatoes and there was competitive buying!
Two days ago, a box of tomatoes containing 14 kgs of tomatoes was sold at Rs. 650/-. 1 kg of tomato cost Rs. 46/-. Yesterday (Sunday, 26th December), the 14-kg box of tomato was sold at Rs. 1150/- or more! This works to a kg of tomato costing Rs. 82/-!
Traders shared in this regard that it would be another month’s time before the number of tomatoes arriving would be normal! Only then there are prospects for the tomato price to come down!”
